About "Dirty Diaries." "Diaries" was a monthly feature I struggled with, then got sick of, then started making more and more sci-fi-ish. (Note the Toxic Avengerish- ness of the "Four Months" diary).
I wrote my first sci-fi "dirty diary" about three months into the job, about a girl who, while walking through a graveyard, slips through a portal to a planet in another dimension (sort of a Phantasm-ish moment). The planet is populated a dying race of women who look like early Britney Spears. When they see the writer of our diary, they rejoice. Because it had been told in their scripture that she, their savior, would appear, and that the cure to their illness would be in our diary-writer's vaginal juices. The entire planet of Britneys has to perform cunnilingus on her in order to survive etc., mayhem ensues etc etc.
Before going to print, all writing was read by editorial and corporate, then handed back to the writer to make changes. I was vaguely expecting someone might object to that first sci-fi diary for some reason. Instead, I got a proofed copy backwith a single word circled-- "continuum." Next to it, someone had written, "Not sure this character would actually use the word 'continuum.'"
